Launch of Coursera

2012

Coursera is an online learning platform founded by the Stanford computer science professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller, who had put their courses online and attracted huge numbers of students. It works with universities and companies to offer courses in subjects such as computer science, business, health and the humanities, free to follow, with a fee for certificates or degrees. It was one of the first platforms to give rise to the movement of massive open online courses, or MOOCs, which grew rapidly in the early 2010s and promised to open up higher education to people everywhere. The enthusiasm later calmed, as completion rates were low, and the company moved to professional certificates and online degrees. It became a public company in 2021.
