Launch of Luna 10

31 March 1966

Luna 10 was a Soviet spacecraft that became the first to go into orbit around the Moon, a few days after its launch. It was an unmanned probe of the Luna program, which had earlier achieved the first soft landing on the Moon with Luna 9. Luna 10 carried instruments for measuring radiation, magnetic fields and the composition of the lunar surface, and it provided data on the Moon's gravity field. The Soviet authorities reportedly arranged for the broadcast of the tune of the Internationale from the spacecraft to the Communist Party congress then in session in Moscow. The probe operated for about two months, until its batteries ran out.
