Construction of Ernst-Happel-Stadion

11 July 1931

The Ernst-Happel-Stadion is the national stadium of Austria, located in the Prater park in Vienna. It was opened as the Praterstadion for the Workers' Olympiad, a sports event organized by socialist labour movements, and was enlarged and renovated several times. In 1992 it was renamed in honour of Ernst Happel, the Austrian footballer and coach, who had led Hamburg and Feyenoord to European Cup victories and had died that year. The stadium has staged several European Cup and Champions League finals, as well as the final of the 2008 European Championship, in which Spain beat Germany. It is used mainly for football, athletics and large concerts.
