Alice Munro was born on 10 July 1931 in Wingham. A Canadian short-story writer, Munro was widely admired for stories set largely in small-town Ontario, which explored the complexities of ordinary lives, memory and family with unusual depth and precision. Her collections included Dance of the Happy Shades, Lives of Girls and Women, The Beggar Maid and Runaway, and she won the Man Booker International Prize in 2009. In 2013 she received the Nobel Prize in Literature, being cited as a master of the contemporary short story. She was frequently compared to Chekhov, and her work did much to raise the standing of the short form.
