Founding of York University

1959

York University is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, which was established by an act of the provincial legislature in 1959. It opened in 1960 with a small group of students at Glendon Hall, and it moved to a large new campus in the northwest of the city in the mid-1960s, as Ontario expanded higher education to accommodate the postwar baby boom. Glendon College, in the city's center, remained a bilingual campus teaching in English and French. Today York is one of the largest universities in Canada, with faculties that include Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business. It is known for strengths in the social sciences and humanities as well as for the arts.
