Viktor Orbán was born on 31 May 1963 in Székesfehérvár. A Hungarian politician, Orban co-founded the Fidesz party as a liberal youth movement in the late 1980s, becoming prominent after a speech in 1989 calling for the withdrawal of Soviet troops. He moved the party to the right and served as prime minister from 1998 to 2002, then returned to office in 2010 with a large majority. His governments adopted a new constitution, brought the media and judiciary under greater state influence and promoted what he called illiberal democracy, drawing criticism from the European Union. He took a hard line on migration and maintained relatively close ties with Russia.
