Rafael Correa was born on 6 April 1963 in Guayaquil. An Ecuadorian economist and politician, Correa was elected president in 2006 and took office in January 2007, serving until 2017. He led the Citizen's Revolution, a left-wing movement that rewrote the constitution in 2008, increased social spending and public works with oil revenue, and was often in conflict with the press, banks and the Indigenous movement. He also renegotiated the country's foreign debt and gave refuge to Julian Assange in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. After he left office he moved to Belgium, and in 2020 an Ecuadorian court convicted him in absentia of corruption, a ruling that he rejects as political persecution.
