George Michael was born on 25 June 1963 in East Finchley. An English singer and songwriter, George Michael came to fame in the early 1980s as one half of the pop duo Wham, with hits such as Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Last Christmas. His solo career began with Faith in 1987, an album that sold millions of copies, and included the songs Father Figure and One More Try. He later turned to more mature themes on Listen Without Prejudice, and had a long legal dispute with his record company. He was open about his homosexuality after a 1998 arrest, and gave generously to charities, much of it in secret. He died on Christmas Day at his home in Oxfordshire.
