Birth of Sean Connery

25 August 1930

Sean Connery was born on 25 August 1930 in Fountainbridge. A Scottish actor born in Edinburgh, Connery rose from working-class beginnings, working as a milkman and a bodybuilder, before being cast as James Bond in Dr. No (1962). He played the spy in seven films and shaped the character on screen, though he worked hard to escape being typecast. He went on to varied roles in films such as The Man Who Would Be King, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Hunt for Red October, and he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Untouchables in 1988. A supporter of Scottish independence, he was knighted in 2000 and died in the Bahamas.
