Pablo Escobar was born on 1 December 1949 in Rio negro. A Colombian drug trafficker, Escobar founded and led the Medellin Cartel, which at its height supplied most of the cocaine entering the United States and made him one of the richest people in the world. He won popular support in parts of Medellin through housing and sports projects, and he was briefly elected to Congress. His organization waged a violent campaign against the state, including bombings and the assassinations of judges, journalists and candidates, which killed thousands of people. After a manhunt by Colombian and American forces, he was killed on a rooftop in Medellin.
