Benjamin Netanyahu was born on 21 October 1949 in Tel Aviv. An Israeli politician and leader of the Likud party, Netanyahu served in an elite army unit and later as Israel's ambassador to the United Nations before entering politics. He first became prime minister in 1996, as the youngest person to hold the post at that time, and returned to office in 2009, serving until 2021, the longest continuous tenure in Israeli history. He returned again after the 2022 elections. His governments have been associated with market-oriented economic reforms, expansion of settlements and a hard line toward Iran and the Palestinians. He has faced corruption charges in Israeli courts, which he denies, and in 2024 the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant that Israel rejects.
