Founding of United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East

8 December 1949

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, was created by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly to give relief to the Palestinians who had been displaced by the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. It began operations a few months later, intended as a temporary body. UNRWA provides education, health care, relief and social services to registered Palestinian refugees and their descendants in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. It is financed mainly by voluntary contributions. The agency has often been caught in political disputes, with Israel and some donor states criticizing its operations, and in 2024 accusations about some of its staff led several donors to suspend funding.
