Mariano Rajoy was born on 27 March 1955 in Santiago de Compostela. A Spanish conservative politician, Rajoy led the People's Party and served as prime minister of Spain from 2011 to 2018. Trained as a lawyer and registrar of property, he held several ministerial posts under José María Aznar before winning the premiership during the euro-zone debt crisis. His government carried out austerity measures and labor reforms, and Spain exited its European bailout of the banking sector. His term was also marked by the Catalan independence crisis of 2017, when he invoked direct rule over the region, and by corruption scandals in his party. He lost a no-confidence vote in 2018 and resigned as party leader.
