Luigi Pirandello was born on 28 June 1867 in Agrigento. An Italian dramatist and novelist, Pirandello wrote works that questioned the nature of reality, identity and illusion. His plays Six Characters in Search of an Author, Henry IV and Right You Are, If You Think You Are broke with theatrical convention and influenced the theatre of the absurd. He also wrote novels such as The Late Mattia Pascal and hundreds of short stories, many set in his native Sicily. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934. He was a member of the Fascist party, and he founded the Teatro d'Arte in Rome in the 1920s.
