Edgar de Wahl was born on 11 August 1867 in Olviopol. An Estonian-Baltic German teacher and linguist, de Wahl is remembered as the creator of Occidental, later renamed Interlingue, a constructed international language published in 1922. He designed it so that words would look familiar to speakers of Romance and other European languages, avoiding the more artificial derivations of Esperanto and Ido. He had earlier taken part in the Esperanto and Ido movements, and he taught mathematics and languages in Tallinn. The language drew a small but enthusiastic following in the interwar years, and it is still used by a few speakers today.
