John McCain was born on 29 August 1936 in Coco Solo. An American politician and naval officer, McCain was born into a family of admirals at a naval base in the Panama Canal Zone and became a navy pilot. In 1967 his plane was shot down over North Vietnam and he spent more than five years as a prisoner of war, enduring torture. After retiring from the navy he was elected to the House of Representatives and then the Senate from Arizona, where he served from 1987 until his death. Known as a maverick, he worked with Democrats on issues such as campaign finance reform. He lost the 2000 Republican primary to George W. Bush and was the party's nominee in 2008, losing to Barack Obama. He died of brain cancer.
