Federico García Lorca died on 19 August 1936 in Víznar, aged 38. A Spanish poet and dramatist born near Granada, García Lorca was one of the leading figures of the Generation of 27. His poetry collections, such as Gypsy Ballads and Poet in New York, mix folk traditions, surreal imagery and themes of love, death and marginalization. His plays Blood Wedding, Yerma and The House of Bernarda Alba, which deal with passion and repression in rural Spain, are among the most performed in the Spanish language. He was a friend of Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel and directed a travelling student theatre company. In August 1936, soon after the start of the Spanish Civil War, he was arrested and shot by Nationalist forces near Granada.
