Jacinda Ardern was born on 26 July 1980 in Hamilton. A New Zealand politician, Ardern became leader of the Labour Party in 2017 and, at the age of thirty-seven, the country's youngest prime minister in more than a century. Her government dealt with the Christchurch mosque shootings of 2019, introducing swift gun-law reforms, and with the White Island volcanic eruption and the COVID-19 pandemic, in which New Zealand initially pursued an elimination strategy. Labour won a landslide in 2020. She also gave birth while in office, becoming one of the few leaders to do so. She resigned in 2023, saying she no longer had enough energy to do the job.
