Founding of CNN

1 June 1980

CNN, the Cable News Network, was launched by the media entrepreneur Ted Turner in Atlanta, Georgia, as the first television channel to broadcast news around the clock. Many industry figures doubted that a 24-hour news channel could succeed, but it became established, and its live coverage of events such as the Challenger disaster in 1986 and the Gulf War in 1991, when its reporters broadcast from Baghdad during the bombing, made it famous worldwide. Turner sold the company to Time Warner, and it later became part of Warner Bros. Discovery. CNN International expanded its reach to viewers across the world, and the channel pioneered the idea of constant, live news coverage.
