Founding of Dutch Language Union

9 September 1980

The Dutch Language Union, or Nederlandse Taalunie, is an organization that was set up by the governments of the Netherlands and Belgium, acting for Flanders, to coordinate policy on the Dutch language. Its headquarters are in The Hague. It is responsible for matters such as the official spelling of Dutch, which is published in the Woordenlijst Nederlandse Taal, known as the Green Booklet, as well as for promoting the teaching of Dutch abroad and the use of the language in digital technology. Suriname became an associate member and later a full member, which recognized the importance of Dutch in that country. The union also supports Dutch literature and cultural cooperation between its members.
