Gavrilo Princip was born on 13 July 1894 in Obljaj. A Bosnian Serb nationalist, Princip was a member of the Young Bosnia movement, which sought the liberation of South Slavs from Austro-Hungarian rule and their union. On 28 June 1914 he shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo, after an earlier attempt that day by another conspirator had failed. The assassination set off the July Crisis, and led to the outbreak of the First World War. Too young to be sentenced to death, he was given twenty years in prison, and died of tuberculosis in the fortress of Terezin. He is seen as a hero by some, and as a terrorist by others.
