Aldous Huxley was born on 26 July 1894 in Godalming. An English writer and philosopher, Huxley belonged to a distinguished intellectual family, and was a grandson of the biologist T. H. Huxley. He is best known for the dystopian novel Brave New World, which imagines a society controlled by genetic engineering, conditioning and pleasure. He wrote numerous other novels and essays, including Point Counter Point and The Doors of Perception, which described his experiments with mescaline. He moved to California in 1937, where he explored mysticism and Eastern philosophy, and wrote screenplays. Poor eyesight affected him all his life.
