The Reichstag building in Berlin was designed by the architect Paul Wallot to house the parliament of the German Empire, and it was inaugurated in December 1894. Its dedication, To the German People, was added over the entrance in 1916. A fire in 1933 shortly after Hitler became chancellor was used by the Nazis to suspend civil liberties, and the building was badly damaged in the Second World War, when Soviet soldiers raised their flag over it in 1945. It was restored in the postwar decades, and after reunification the architect Norman Foster added a glass dome. Since 1999 it has been home to the German Bundestag.
