Ulysses S. Grant died on 23 July 1885 in Wilton, aged 63. The 18th President of the United States, Grant rose from an obscure background to become the commander of the Union armies in the American Civil War. His victories at Forts Henry and Donelson, Vicksburg and Chattanooga led President Lincoln to place him in overall command, and in April 1865 he accepted Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. As president from 1869 to 1877 he supported Reconstruction, enforced civil rights laws against the Ku Klux Klan and backed the Fifteenth Amendment, but his administration was damaged by corruption scandals. Dying of throat cancer, he completed his memoirs, which were praised and sold well.
