Edgar Degas was born on 19 July 1834 in Paris. A French artist, Degas is associated with the Impressionists, though he rejected the label and preferred to be called a realist. He is best known for his pictures of ballet dancers, which show rehearsals and backstage scenes in unusual angles and cropped compositions, as well as for scenes of racehorses, bathers and laundresses. A masterly draftsman, he worked in oil, pastel and sculpture, including the Little Dancer Aged Fourteen. He took part in most of the Impressionist exhibitions. In later life his eyesight failed, and he lived reclusively in Paris.
