Construction of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv

1834

Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is the leading university of Ukraine. It was founded in 1834 by decree of Tsar Nicholas I as the Saint Vladimir Imperial University, in a drive to strengthen Russian influence in the western provinces after the Polish uprising. Its main building, painted red with black columns, was designed by the architect Vincenzo Beretti and completed in the 1840s. The university has been renamed several times and in 1939 took the name of the Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko. It has trained generations of Ukrainian scientists, writers and public figures, and is a major center of research and teaching.
