Pius X was born on 2 June 1835 in Riese Pio X. Born Giuseppe Sarto into a poor family in northern Italy, he rose through the ranks of the Church as a parish priest, bishop and Patriarch of Venice before being elected pope. His motto was to restore all things in Christ. He encouraged frequent communion and lowered the age of first communion for children, reformed church music and the Roman Curia, and initiated the codification of canon law. He fiercely opposed Modernism, which he condemned in 1907 in the encyclical Pascendi. He was canonized in 1954, and he died shortly after the outbreak of the First World War.
