Giosuè Carducci was born on 27 July 1835 in Valdicastello Carducci. An Italian poet and literary critic, Carducci was the leading poet of Italy in the decades after unification. His collections, including Rime nuove and Odi barbare, drew on classical metres and a love of Roman and medieval history, and many of his poems celebrate national and civic themes. A republican and anticlerical early in life, he later became more conservative and supported the monarchy. He taught Italian literature at the University of Bologna for over four decades, and in 1906 he became the first Italian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
