William Faulkner was born on 25 September 1897 in New Albany. An American novelist from Mississippi, Faulkner set most of his work in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, modelled on the area around his home town of Oxford. His novels, which include The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, Light in August and Absalom, Absalom, explore the history, racism and social decay of the American South with experimental techniques such as shifting narrators, stream of consciousness and non-chronological narrative. He was little noticed at first, but his reputation grew after the Second World War, and he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949, as well as two Pulitzer Prizes. He also worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood.
