ANZUS is a security treaty between Australia, New Zealand and the United States, signed in San Francisco. It was concluded in the early Cold War, at the time of the peace treaty with Japan, partly to reassure Australia and New Zealand about Japanese rearmament and the presence of the United States in the Pacific. The parties agreed to consult one another when any of them felt threatened and to act to meet a common danger according to their constitutional processes. In the 1980s, New Zealand's ban on nuclear-armed and nuclear-powered ships led the United States to suspend its obligations to that country. The alliance between Australia and the United States has continued and remains a cornerstone of Australian defence policy.
