Juan Manuel Santos was born on 10 August 1951 in Bogotá. A Colombian politician, Santos served as President of Colombia from 2010 to 2018. A member of a prominent family of journalists, he served as defense minister under his predecessor, Alvaro Uribe, directing military operations against the FARC guerrillas. As president he opened peace negotiations with the group in Havana, and signed a peace agreement in 2016 that ended a conflict of more than fifty years. A referendum rejected the first version of the accord, but a revised text was approved by Congress. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016 for his efforts.
