Discovery of Ananke

28 September 1951

Ananke is an irregular outer moon of Jupiter, discovered by Seth Nicholson at the Mount Wilson Observatory in 1951. It travels on a distant, inclined orbit in the retrograde direction, and it gives its name to the Ananke group, a family of moons with similar orbits that are thought to be fragments of a single captured body broken apart by collisions. Ananke itself is only a few tens of kilometres across. It was known as Jupiter XII until 1975, when it received the name of the Greek goddess of necessity and compulsion.
