Mohamed Morsi was born on 20 August 1951 in El-Adwah. An Egyptian engineer and politician, Morsi was a leading figure of the Muslim Brotherhood and became Egypt's first democratically elected president in 2012, following the uprising that ended the rule of Hosni Mubarak. His brief tenure was marked by conflict with the judiciary and the opposition over a new constitution and a decree expanding his powers, and by economic difficulties. After mass protests against him in the summer of 2013, the army under Abdel Fattah el-Sisi removed him from office. He was arrested and tried on several charges, and he collapsed and died in a courtroom in 2019.
