2025 Kamchatka earthquake

29 July 2025

The 2025 Kamchatka earthquake was a magnitude 8.8 megathrust earthquake off the east coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East, near the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It occurred where the Pacific plate is pushed beneath the Okhotsk plate along the Kuril-Kamchatka trench, one of the most seismically active zones in the world, and it was among the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. A tsunami warning was issued across the Pacific, and waves reached Russia, Japan, Hawaii and the western coast of the Americas, leading to evacuations of coastal areas. Damage and casualties were limited compared with the earthquake's size, thanks in part to the preparedness of coastal communities. Strong aftershocks followed, and volcanic activity on the peninsula increased.
