2019 United Kingdom general election

12 December 2019

The 2019 United Kingdom general election was called by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, after Parliament had repeatedly blocked his attempts to leave the European Union, to get a mandate for his Brexit deal. He campaigned under the slogan Get Brexit Done, and the Conservatives won a majority of eighty seats, their largest in decades. The Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn lost many seats in its traditional heartlands in the north of England and the Midlands, and had its worst result since the 1930s. The Scottish National Party made major gains in Scotland. The result made it possible for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union in January 2020.
