The 2019 Turkish offensive into north-eastern Syria, also called Operation Peace Spring, was launched by Turkey and Syrian rebel groups allied with it against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. It came days after President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of American troops from the border area. Turkey regarded the Kurdish People's Protection Units, the main component of the SDF, as an extension of the PKK, which it considers a terrorist group, and wanted to create a safe zone along the border. Turkish forces took the towns of Tell Abyad and Ras al-Ayn. The offensive displaced several hundred thousand people. Ceasefires brokered by the US and Russia followed, and the Kurdish forces turned to the Syrian government for protection.
