2018 Russian presidential election

18 March 2018

The 2018 Russian presidential election was won by the incumbent, Vladimir Putin, who received about three quarters of the votes, in an election with a turnout of around two thirds of voters. It was held on the anniversary of Russia's annexation of Crimea. The main opposition figure, Alexei Navalny, was barred from running because of a criminal conviction that was widely seen as politically motivated. The other candidates included the Communist Pavel Grudinin, who came second, the nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky, and the television personality Ksenia Sobchak. International observers noted that the election was well organized but that there was a lack of genuine competition and some irregularities. The victory gave Putin a fourth term.
