1993 Russian constitutional crisis

from 21 September 1993 to 4 October 1993

The 1993 Russian constitutional crisis was a political confrontation between President Boris Yeltsin and the Supreme Soviet, the parliament led by Ruslan Khasbulatov and the vice president Alexander Rutskoy, over the pace of economic reform and the division of power. Yeltsin issued a decree dissolving parliament, which the parliament declared illegal, and impeached him. Parliament's supporters, including hardline communists and nationalists, barricaded themselves in the White, the parliament building, and the confrontation became violent in early October, when armed supporters tried to seize the Ostankino television center. Yeltsin ordered tanks to shell the White House, which ended the revolt, and many people were killed. A new constitution, approved in a referendum in December, gave the president very wide powers.
