1988 United States presidential election

8 November 1988

The 1988 United States presidential election was won by the Republican candidate George H. W. Bush, who was then Vice President under Ronald Reagan, against the Democratic governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis. Bush ran on the continuation of Reagan's economic record and on a promise of no new taxes, and his campaign attacked Dukakis on crime and patriotism, with advertisements that were widely criticised. Dukakis, who had led in early summer polls, lost most states. Bush won with a large majority in the Electoral College, the first time a sitting vice president had been elected president directly since Martin Van Buren in 1836. Dan Quayle was his running mate.
