Release of Oliver & Company

18 November 1988

Oliver and Company is an animated musical film produced by Disney, a loose retelling of Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist set in New York City, with animals playing the main roles. Oliver is an orphaned kitten who is taken in by a gang of street dogs led by a mongrel called Dodger, who live with a petty criminal, Fagin, and are pursued by a villainous loan shark. The cast includes the singer Billy Joel as the voice of Dodger and Bette Midler as the poodle Georgette, and the film features a number of pop songs. It was a commercial success, though not as acclaimed as Disney films of the following years.
