US Airways Flight 1549

15 January 2009

US Airways Flight 1549 was an Airbus A320 that took off from LaGuardia Airport in New York, bound for Charlotte, and struck a flock of Canada geese shortly after takeoff, which disabled both engines. Captain Chesley Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles, unable to reach a nearby airport, glided the aircraft to a landing on the Hudson River, next to Manhattan. All 155 people on board survived, helped by the crew's skill and by rapid rescue by ferries and boats. The event, called the Miracle on the Hudson, was investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, which praised the crew's actions. It became the subject of a book by Sullenberger and the film Sully.
