Unveiling of The Motherland Calls

15 October 1967

The Motherland Calls is a giant statue on Mamayev Kurgan, the hill overlooking Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, in Russia. It forms the centrepiece of a memorial complex to the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the bloodiest and most decisive battles of the Second World War. The sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich created the figure of a woman with a raised sword calling her sons to defend the homeland, and the engineer Nikolai Nikitin devised its structure of prestressed concrete. When it was completed it was the tallest statue in the world. The monument's sword was reportedly replaced with a lighter one after problems in strong winds, and the site is a destination for visitors and ceremonies.
