Death of Che Guevara

9 October 1967

Che Guevara died on 9 October 1967 in La Higuera, aged 39. An Argentine Marxist revolutionary, Ernesto Guevara, known as Che, trained as a doctor and travelled across Latin America, which convinced him of the need for revolution. He joined Fidel Castro in Mexico and fought in the Cuban Revolution, becoming a key commander and, after the victory in 1959, a minister in the new government. He left Cuba in the mid-1960s to promote guerrilla warfare in Africa and then in Bolivia, where he was captured and executed by the Bolivian army with American assistance. Admired by many as a symbol of rebellion and criticised by others for his role in executions, he became a global icon.
