Union of South Africa

from 31 May 1910 to 31 May 1961

The Union of South Africa was a self-governing dominion of the British Empire, formed by the unification of the Cape Colony, Natal, the Transvaal and the Orange River Colony, which had been created after the South African War. Louis Botha was its first prime minister. Political power was held by the white minority, and laws such as the Natives Land Act of 1913 restricted where black South Africans could own land. After the National Party came to power in 1948, the policy of apartheid imposed strict racial segregation. Following a referendum among white voters, South Africa became a republic and left the Commonwealth, and the Union ceased to exist. Majority rule came only in 1994.
