Tripartite Pact

27 September 1940

The Tripartite Pact was a military alliance signed in Berlin by Germany, Italy and Japan, which created the Axis as a formal grouping. The signatories recognized each other's leadership in establishing a new order in Europe and in Greater East Asia, and promised to help each other if one was attacked by a power not already in the war, which was a clear warning to the United States. Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Bulgaria later joined, and Yugoslavia signed in 1941 but then saw its government overthrown in a coup. The pact brought little real coordination between the partners, who fought largely separate wars. It linked the conflicts in Europe and Asia in the Allied mind.
