John Lennon was born on 9 October 1940 in Liverpool Maternity Hospital. A British musician and songwriter, Lennon co-founded The Beatles in Liverpool and wrote many of their best-known songs in partnership with Paul McCartney. After the band split in 1970 he pursued a solo career, releasing albums such as John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, whose title song became an anthem for peace. With his wife Yoko Ono he staged public peace protests, including the bed-ins of 1969, and he moved to New York in the 1970s. After a break from music to raise his son, he returned to recording in 1980. He was shot and killed outside his apartment building in Manhattan on the evening of 8 December 1980.
