On 22 February 1980, at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, a United States ice-hockey team of amateurs and college players, with an average age of 21 and coached by Herb Brooks, beat the Soviet Union, winners of four straight Olympic golds and widely regarded as the best team in the world, by 4 goals to 3. The Americans were behind and came back in the third period, with a goal by Mike Eruzione, and held on. Broadcaster Al Michaels called, 'Do you believe in miracles? Yes!' At the height of the Cold War, with Soviet tanks in Afghanistan and the Moscow Games boycott pending, the game was a patriotic boost. The US won gold two days later.
