The Spartacist uprising was a revolt in Berlin during the German Revolution, in which left-wing radicals tried to overthrow the provisional government of the Social Democrat Friedrich Ebert. It was led by the Spartacus League, which had broken with the Social Democrats and was soon to become the Communist Party of Germany, and by other revolutionary groups. A general strike and armed occupation of newspaper buildings were met by the government with force, using army units and the Freikorps, volunteer paramilitary units of former soldiers. The fighting left many dead, and the revolutionary leaders Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were captured and murdered. The defeat cleared the way for elections to a national assembly, and the new Weimar Republic.
