Gone with the Wind is a historical novel by the American writer Margaret Mitchell, set in the southern United States during the Civil War and Reconstruction. It follows Scarlett O'Hara, the headstrong daughter of a Georgia plantation owner, through the destruction of her way of life, her struggle to save the family estate, Tara, and her stormy relationship with Rhett Butler. The book was an enormous success on publication and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year. A lavish film adaptation followed in 1939. The novel has since been widely criticised for its romanticised view of the antebellum South and its treatment of slavery and of Black characters.
