Publication of Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

1886

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a short novel by the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, set in a foggy and respectable Victorian London. It follows the lawyer Gabriel Utterson as he investigates the link between his friend, the doctor Henry Jekyll, and the violent Edward Hyde, a mystery whose solution is that they are one man. Stevenson said the central idea came to him in a dream. The book became an immediate success and a powerful image of the divided human nature behind outward respectability. The names Jekyll and Hyde entered everyday language for a person with two contrasting sides, and the story has been adapted countless times for stage, film and television.
